Stephanie Schorow began her career as a professional journalist immediately after graduating from Northwestern University. She has worked for newspapers in Missouri, Utah, Idaho, Connecticut and Massachusetts, and has won awards for her feature writing and editorials. A fellowship from the National Press Foundation sent her to Mexico for four months to study Spanish, and she later received a master’s degree in Latin American studies from New York University. She moved to Boston in 1989 to join  the Associated Press, the world’s largest newsgathering operation, where she covered such events as the Charles Stuart murder case. She was hired at the Boston Herald in 1993 as the Assistant Lifestyles Editor and spent the next 12 years writing news and feature stories and editing arts and feature copy. She has covered general features, cultural trends and health and science issues and wrote a biweekly column on the lifestyle impact of emerging informational technology. In 2005, she launched a freelance writing/public relations business. She has written for The Boston Globe, the Globe magazine, the Harvard Gazette, the MIT news office and numerous other publications. In 2011, she left full-time freelancing to become the assistant director of public relations and editorial services at Bunker Hill Community College, while continuing to teach freelance writing and feature writing at Emerson College and the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. She is the author or co-author of six books on Boston history, including Drinking Boston: A History of the City and its Spirits, The Boston Mob Guide, Boston on Fire: A History of Fires and Firefighting in Boston and East of Boston: Notes from the Harbor Islands. She has appeared as an expert in broadcast documentaries on the Cocoanut Grove Fire, the Great Boston Fire of 1872 and the Brink’s robbery of 1950. In January, she became the director of the Master of Arts in Professional Writing at Regis College, a graduate level program that aims to educate the next generation of professional writers in a multimedia world. In addition to working on her first novel, she is a clay artist at the Mudflat Studio in Somerville and sells her work through the Mudflat Gallery in Porter Square. She serves on the Mudflat board as well as the boards of the Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands and the Boston Fire Historical Society.
